Boothbay’s Soccer Team Scores a Place in the Playoffs with an Impressive Win Versus Lisbon Greyhounds
This past week Boothbay launched their way into the playoffs with two clutch wins at home. Head Coach Ben Powell, and Assistant Coach Joey Paolillo led their team to victory against Dirigo 3-1, and the day after the Seahawks faced possibly one of their most important games of the season.
They matched up against the Lisbon Greyhounds, under the lights, Wednesday night Honoring seniors Colette Bertin, Angie Perkins, and Chyanne Rodgers before their last homecoming game. Coach Paolillo is quoted saying that there’s a “huge (positive) effect” on the team when the team plays under the lights with larger crowds, “the bigger the crowd the better.” Boothbay had played the Greyhounds earlier in the year suffering a 0-2 loss. “Lisbon is a tough matchup for most teams,” says Coach Powell, “They are a big team with some very strong, athletic forwards and a quick defense.” Nevertheless, in a game they needed to win in order to have a chance to have a spot in this year’s class D playoffs, Boothbay came out strong defeating Lisbon 4-0. The first goal was scored by forward Hannah Cola, pushing the ball through the defense, and beating the Greyhound goalie in the bottom corner. Later in the first half Hanah Cola again scored off a beautiful assist by Angie Perkins. Followed up by midfielder Reagan Cola’s goal that she was able to take by herself all the way from midfield to goal, making it 3-0 Boothbay before the second half. Angie Perkins tilted the score in the Seahawk’s favor even more when she scored an incredibly difficult goal from a tough angle on the sideline, putting it over the keeper’s head, for the final score of the game. Boothbay’s defenders Colette Bertin, Chyanne Rogers, Maddy Guadette, and Tori Morin, shut down Lisbon’s attack, and goalkeeper Jackie Mcloon led the Seahawks to a shutout, with the final score being 4-0.
With two wins in the past week Boothbay moves into playoff position and will be playing Mt. Abrams in the first round of the playoffs next week, a team Boothbay lost to earlier in the season, which Coach Paolillo called, “a very winnable game,” and is confident in the team’s ability going into their playoff game. Let’s wish our Lady Seahawks good luck in their upcoming game!
